WEST GREENWICH — A new chapter in the history of the Stephen J. Anderson Memorial Sports Complex began this week, as work officially commenced on the long-awaited field lighting project. The start of construction marks the final phase of a multi-year effort to bring nighttime sports to EWG students and the broader community.
Following the recent referendum vote and the subsequent approval of contracts by the School Committee, the project has quickly moved from the planning stage to active development. Crews from Musco Sports Lighting and E.W. Audet & Sons are now on-site, beginning the process of installing the state-of-the-art LED lighting system. The new lighting will not only provide a safe and well-lit environment for evening games and practices but is also energy-efficient, aligning with the district's long-term sustainability goals.
The football team is already off to a great start, with their first home game of the season scheduled for Sunday, September 7th, against West Warwick. The goal remains to have the lights fully operational and ready for a special "first night under the lights" game before the conclusion of the fall football season.
The entire project is a culmination of a decade of hard work and dedication by the community, particularly the nonprofit EWG Sports 4 Kids. Their efforts to rebuild the complex in 2008-2009 laid the groundwork, and the community's enthusiastic support in a recent vote has made the final piece of the original vision a reality. This lighting project is more than just an infrastructure upgrade; it's a testament to the community's commitment to its students and the legacy of Coach Stephen J. Anderson.
